How Much Do You Know About APTC?
Who are we?
The history of Adama Polytechnic College, as an educational institution, goes back to the period of Emperor Haile Sillassie who laid the foundation stone in 1939 and it was named “Nazareth Primary School”. In 1940’s the school was expanded to junior secondary school offering classes up to grade eight and had got its second name Atse Gelawdiows comprehension and secondary School. Later on with the help of some public funding, the school was able to open grade nine in 1952. In the following years it became a comprehensive secondary school and reached a stage where some 64 students were able to sit for grade 12 national examinations in 1955.
Then in 1976 it was upgraded to Adama Technical College and became operational with the technical and personnel assistance of the Soviet Union (USSR). However, the integration of vocational training and academic streams under the same management system had created some administrative problems and affected the quality of education significantly. To solve this problem, an attempt was made in 1971 to separate the academic streams and the technical and vocational streams. The academic stream was named “Hawas Secondary School “and the vocational and technical stream was named “AdamaTegbareid Technical School”. In 1994-95 further administrative reforms were made by assigning two different school directors for each stream in the same school compound. In 2000, the academic stream (better known as Hawas preparatory school) was officially separated from Adama TVET College. So over the last sixty nine years APTC has witnessed several significant advancement and transformations. And it has been 8 years since it has the present status and name Adama Polytechnic College. As of the Ethiopian millennium Adama Technique College has been an autonomous higher training institute with its own legal personality. At present, evidences show that the college provides training in more than 15 departments
